How Long Did Joe Alwyn Date Taylor Swift, and Who's His New Girlfriend?
British actor Joe Alwyn isn't one to hog the limelight – which might explain why his relationship withTaylor Swift lasted so long and, at least appeared, so strong.
While they tried to keep their relationship out of the media glare, it was always obvious it was a serious and committed one. Alwyn even helped write 10 songs for Taylor between 2020 – 2022. And to good effect. He's credited as co-writer on Exile which reached the top 10 in both the US and UK charts, and Betty which won the 'Most Performed Song' of 2021 at the BMI London Awards.
But just how long were this unlikely couple an item, where did they meet and who's Alwyn dating now?
Where did Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn Meet?
The couple never revealed where they first met, but the event may have been referenced in one of Swift's hit songs. The singer isn't averse to incorporating her love life into her lyrics, and Dress, a track from her 2017 album Reputation hints they were introduced at the 2016 Met Gala.
She sings:
'Flashback when you met me, your buzzcut and my hair bleached'. If you look at photos of the event, you'll see Taylor Swift sporting bleached hair and Joe Alwyn with a buzzcut.
Another line in the song goes, 'Made your mark on me, a golden tattoo' but the validity of this is disputed. There have been rumours that Taylor Swift got a temporary tattoo In gold at one of Drake's parties around the time she and Alwyn got together, but this claim has never been verified.
How Long Was Joe Alwyn Dating Taylor Swift?
The pair were pretty secretive about their relationship so it's hard to pinpoint the moment they became official. But if we assume it was shortly after meeting at the Met Gala in May 2016, we can say they got together in early summer of that year.
It was two years later that the pair posted those famous images on Instagram that showed each of them standing next to the same cactus. This is widely regarded as the moment they confirmed what everybody already knew.
As referenced in Swift's Instagram post, this came just before she began her Reputation tour.
News of their split first broke on April 8, 2023, via Entertainment Tonight, with CNN reporting a day later that a source close to Swift had confirmed, 'Taylor and Joe broke up a few weeks ago. They simply grew apart and plan to remain friends.'
So, the pair were together for around six years, during which time they were the subject of many rumours, including that they were at one point engaged.
This tabloid intrusion was addressed by Swift Lavender Haze from Midnights (2022), her tenth studio album.
Hinting that the song was a reference to her relationship with Alwyn she described how “the lavender haze...meant you were in that all-encompassing love glow' and 'you'll do anything to stay there and not let people bring you down off of that cloud.'
Looking back now, the song may have been one of the first signs that the relationship was reaching its end.
For his part, Alwyn spoke directly about the engagement rumours to WSJ Magazine, saying, 'If I had a pound for every time I think I've been told I've been engaged, then I'd have a lot of pound coins,' adding 'I mean, the truth is, if the answer was yes, I wouldn't say, and if the answer was no, I wouldn't say.'
So, that clears that up!
Who is Joe Alwyn Dating Now?
As you might expect from a man who likes to keep a low profile, we don't know for sure. Shortly after Alwyn split from Taylor Swift, there were rumours of a relationship with Brutalist star Emma Laird.
These were based on photos of him put out on Instagram by Laird. The images, though, didn't really scream 'relationship'.
He's also been seen out with Alison Oliver, his co-star from Conversations With Friends. But any suggestion of romance between them is merely speculation
A source told People that Alwyn was 'dating and happy' in April 2024, but as to who the lucky lady might be, so far, that information is being kept under wraps.
