Despite being a spinoff of How I Met Your Mother, How I Met Your Father is desperately trying to become a show of its own. The latest plot twist can vouch for that!

How I Met Your Father, the series that focuses on Sophie's early adulthood, is already in season 2. The midseason finale has just aired and unleashed a bunch of storylines that have us confused and anxious. Just like the original show, aww!

Sophie (the main character) is telling her son in the future how she met his dad, while simultaneously searching for her dad in the present.

So many daddy issues cooped up in one show – the old Barney Stinson would have been over the moon!

Jesse and Sophie are the "will they, won't they" couple of the show (much like Ted and Robin used to be in the original), and the midseason finale has shown us that Jesse is not over Sophie (surprise, surprise!).

He still writes love poems to her (now that is the romance that we need in the 21st century).

While we are happy for the spark that presumably still exists, it also means that Jesse is probably not the father of Sophie's future kid.

The show has highlighted Jesse's importance on multiple occasions, but it would be just a tad too predictable if he turns out to be the dad. Not in the best HIMYM tradition.

We have already gotten hints that Sophie will eventually date other people (some of them are even in her friend group), and we have yet to see all of that explored.

For now, our hearts are throbbing only for Jesse and Sophie's potential romance.

The poem could serve as a way for Jesse to finally move on to the boyfriend status and mark the beginning of their long-term relationship. However, this does not mean that he will be the father.

Fans believe that if Jesse were the dad, we would have seen the son and his reactions to various Sophie's interactions with Jesse.

While that sounds logical, it would take away the suspense. Many seem to think that Sid is a likely candidate for the role (though he would have to break up with or cheat on Hannah first).

Maybe we will get some answers or at least more hints to theorize with in the second half of season 2.

How I Met Your Father is set to return for nine more episodes at the end of May, so buckle up – two more months to go, and we might just see Sophie and Jesse finally together (for real this time).
