How General Hospital's Nikolas Cassadine Made Sure To Repeat His Mother's Torture
Like father, like son.
Summary:
- General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air for more than 60 years.
- One of the most popular veteran characters of the show is Laura Spencer, who had an illegitimate son, Nikolas Cassadine.
- Although Nikolas became incredibly popular upon his introduction, his character turned out to be very cruel.
- His actions toward Esme Prince reflect the same torment his own mother endured.
Even though General Hospital has been on the air for more than 6 decades now, the show still made sure to maintain at least some level of consistency. While some fans may argue that the show has been making fewer and fewer connections to its own past in recent years, the reality is that some of them are so strong that it's actually frightening.
One of the most chilling storylines, cleverly reused after 80's favorite character Laura Spencer, was implemented by her own son, Nikolas Cassadine, and viewers who caught the parallel are still in shock at the level of inhumanity.
Perhaps Nikolas had more in common with his supervillain father, Stavros, than any of us could have imagined.
What Happened to Esme Prince
Esme Prince was first introduced to the soap as the girlfriend of Nikolas' son, Spencer. However, the storyline led her to have a one-night stand that marked the beginning of her torture.
When Esme became pregnant by Nikolas, he decided to imprison her at Wyndemere. However, his plan went awry and she managed to escape before giving birth. It almost cost the woman her life, but in a lucky turn of events, she was rescued and reached the hospital for all the help she needed.
As if that story weren't horrible enough, Nikolas didn't come up with the idea of sending the mother of his child away while she was pregnant out of the blue. In fact, it's eerily similar to what his own mother had to deal with while carrying him.
Much of Laura's storyline was based on her captivity by Mikkos and Stavros Cassadines. She was convinced that her real husband Luke was dead, but that wasn't the worst she had to endure. Stavros' obsession with her led to non-consensual relations that ended with the birth of Nikolas himself.
This parallel may also explain why Laura Spencer always had a soft spot for Esme and was especially pitiful towards her. Knowing how terrifying captivity was, she could imagine the pain and horror the girl had to go through, all thanks to her own son.
