How Adding Multiverse Can Fix Star Wars For Everyone
It would have instantly solved many of the franchise's problems and possibly ended the rivalry between Legends and Canon fans.
The concept of the multiverse is quite a popular trend these days, appearing in MCU and DCU movies (although it has existed in the related comics for quite some time), Spider-Verse movies, and the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022).
But for some unknown reason, it hasn't been introduced into Star Wars, one of the largest fictional universes ever created, despite the fact that the multiverse fits it perfectly and could have instantly solved a huge number of problems.
When it was announced in 2014 that the old Star Wars canon, now called Legends, was no longer valid in favor of the new Disney- approved canon, it caused a huge stir among fans, as decades of world development became meaningless in an instant.
The controversy surrounding the sequel trilogy, which many consider to be underwhelming at best, only exacerbated the situation, dividing fans into two opposing sides.
While some praise the new additions to the franchise, others completely despise the sequels and even the TV shows, leading to constant debate online. But doesn't this sound familiar?
Take the Spider-Man movies for example, with each new reboot some people were totally against new actors and overall changes, so when Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, even the haters of Tom Holland were somewhat satisfied.
So it's beyond comprehension why Star Wars can't do the same, especially considering that both Legends and Canon have already toyed with the concept.
In the former case, there were the Waru, beings from a parallel universe that appeared in the novel The Crystal War (1994), while in the latter, there is the World Between Worlds, a plane within the Force that allows travel through time and space that appeared in the TV series Star Wars Rebels.
Adding the multiverse to the franchise would instantly make Legends canon as well, removing it from its current "inferior" status and allowing for crossover stories that would please both new and old fans.
Then there will be no need for petitions to retcon the sequels that came out after their release, because those who hate the new direction Star Wars has taken will have their old stories, with Jaina and Jacen Solo and Luke still leading the New Jedi Order instead of Rey and Kylo Ren.
It will also allow for adaptations of old stories, imagine an animated show based on the Legacy comics with a dark, gritty art style that would fit the original perfectly.
