The looming war won’t go away without royal victims.

With each new episode, House of the Dragon ’s brand new second season is getting closer to the promised bloody war between the Targaryens, and though the whole action hasn’t started officially yet, there were definitely signs of the whole mess coming into King’s Landing and Dragonstone.

Apart from a shocking murder of young Prince Jaehaerys that brought even more tension to the Blacks and the Greens’ conflict, the season’s first episode features one more crucial decision made by Corlys Velaryon, and it is likely to have gone unnoticed by many fans.

The second season’s episode 1 titled A Son for a Son sees most of its lead characters starting preparations for the inevitable war.

While the Greens gather in their council room coming up with their own plan of the attack, the Blacks are seemingly taking advantage of their trump card as Corlys Velaryon, Lord of the Tides with the most powerful navy army to offer to Rhaenyra, is caught establishing a blockade of King’s Landing which will soon be known as the Gullet.

It may come as something obscure for the show’s fans now, but George R.R. Martin’s book lovers will grasp immediately what key role this place will play in the near future. House of the Dragon’s season 2 has yet to bring the war to the screens, but when it does, nothing will be more brutal than the notorious Battle of the Gullet.

Warning: book spoilers ahead!

In an attempt to lift Lord Corlys’s blockade, Rhaenyra and her allies, accompanied by dragons, will have a massive attack on the Gullet provoking a huge fight that will cost many lives from both sides, including Rhaenyra’s son Jacaerys Velaryon.

It’s not clear yet how things will turn out in the series, but in the book Jace is killed with a crossbow bolt while he is riding his dragon low enough to be reached by the Greens’ weapons.

Considering that the second season isn’t in a hurry to kick the highly anticipated war off, Jace’s death is very unlikely to happen until this installment’s finale or even the next season, especially since the numerous trailers and teasers had no footage of the Battle of the Gullet whatsoever.

House of the Dragon’s next episode is set to premiere on July 7.
