House of the Dragon Season 2 Will Reportedly Cut Important Book Characters

After the overwhelming success of Game of Thrones, it was obvious that George Martin ’s world was very much not off the hook of live-action adaptations. Soon, the first one followed: House of the Dragon is the series focused on the civil war between two Targaryen clans, and it, too, has a huge success with the audience.

Season 1 was sensational, but it concluded quite a while ago. Now, we’re kind of just left here waiting for the next series; it’s not like we can hope for GRRM to provide us with any A Song of Ice and Fire content anymore. But even if we don’t have an ongoing series right now, it doesn’t mean we don’t get news about the upcoming ones: insiders and scoopers never sleep, and they give us some peculiar data.

Will HotD Season 2 Cut Crucial Characters?

The most recent rumor about the next season of House of the Dragon suggests that two important book characters will not be presented in the series. The characters in question are Daeron Targaryen and Nettles the Dragonseed, and the information was spread by a Brazilian fan account of the HBO show.

“We've heard from an inside source that Daeron Targaryen and Nettles are not included in the S2 cast of House of the Dragon,” the X (formerly Twitter) post says.

While information from fan accounts and various scoopers without any evidence can not be taken at face value, it’s still a somewhat worrying development that such rumors are emerging. While live-action adaptations of George Martin’s works tend to cut characters they deem “unnecessary,” this could still complicate things later on.

Who Are Daeron Targaryen and Nettles the Dragonseed?

For those of you who haven’t read Fire & Blood, here’s a brief explanation of why these two characters are important for the plot.

Daeron Targaryen is the fourth and youngest child of Viserys Targaryen and Alicent Hightower. He was raised far from King’s Landing, in Oldtown, but he was still a Targaryen — and in a show about the Targaryens, his absence would definitely be all too noticeable. So far, Daeron hasn’t even been mentioned in House of the Dragon.

Nettles the Dragonseed is one of the four dragonseeds — non-Targaryen folks who managed to tame a dragon for their own. Unlike the other three, Nettles is the only dragonseed who definitely could not be a Targaryen bastard which makes her the most unique dragon rider in the entirety of Westeros’s story. Also, she's a badass.

Are Daeron and Nettles Completely Out of the Picture?

Once again, there is no guarantee that the information about Daeron and Nettles being cut entirely is correct. There were rumors previously that an actress was cast for the part of Nettles, and GRRM himself hinted at Daeron’s appearance later in the show. Even if these two won’t appear in Season 2, they might still join House of the Dragon later.

Live-action adaptations often tackle book events using a different timeline, so both Daeron and Nettles could appear later down the line if their canon appearances happen to be delayed until Season 3. It’s too soon to worry about them at this point.
