House of the Dragon's Aegon Actor Teases 'Meaty' Season 2
While the first season of House of the Dragon was no doubt a hit, there were a few complaints about it, and among the more common ones was the complaint that just not enough things happened throughout the season, that it was one extended setup for the real plot.
This fans' complaint is not unfounded, even if Season 1 was that by design. Also, insofar as setups go, Season 1 still did not cover everything. For example Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), who is going to be one of the most crucial characters during the civil war – and one of the most dangerous champions of the Green party – had little role in it.
During his panel at the recent official Game of Thrones Convention in Los Angeles, Tom Glynn-Carney, who played Aegon II, told that filming of Season 2 will begin in March 2023, and mentioned that issue.
"I didn't really get a great run at things [in season 1]," he said. "It felt very quick. I was in a few scenes. Season 2 will be a lot more meaty, so I'm looking forward to the challenge."
Rest assured, with the Targaryen civil war officially starting by the end of Episode 10, things will begin happening at a quick pace in Season 2.
In Fire & Blood, the book by George Martin on which House of the Dragon is based, Aegon II is far from the hedonistic brat trying to run from the kingship whom the series Aegon was throughout most of his appearances in Season 1 – he fights for the crown tooth and nail, leading from the front, on the back of his dragon. The coronation scene in Episode 9 already had shown us the beginning of his transformation into a more formidable and dangerous person.
That was not unintentional on the actor's part. As Glynn-Carney said about his character and what we can expect from him in the upcoming season.
"I also see [Aegon] as being incredibly complex. He's not an out-and-out psychopath… but I see a multilayered character that just has endless potential of pits of vulnerability and empathy and things that we don't see that I think it's important to have at least a flavor of, because it brings the humanity to him, and that's what pulls people in two separate directions."
We'll be able to see how that works on screen once Season 2 is released sometime in 2024-25.
