New on-set photos hint at the tragic and brutal event to come.

With production on season 2 of House of the Dragon in full swing, more and more on-set photos are appearing on the Internet, giving fans a glimpse of what is to come.

But one pair in particular has caused quite a stir in the fandom, especially among those familiar with the Fire & Blood novel on which the show is based. Warning: Potential spoiler for the upcoming series.

As we all remember, at the time of Game of Thrones, 100 years later, all dragons were extinct, leaving only unhatched eggs that found their way to Daenerys Targaryen.

And it looks like season 2 of the prequel series is about to show us the beginning of the end for the dragons.

Two photos from the set show a covered wagon with a pointy object underneath, and the dried blood stains on the sides only add to the suspicion.

Fans believe that the mysterious bloody object is none other than the severed head of Meleys, Rhaenys Targaryen's dragon.

In the book, she fought with two other dragons, Vhagar and Sunfyre, and put up a good fight, but unfortunately didn't survive in the end.

Her body was torn to shreds, and the head was brought back to King's Landing and dragged through the city on a cart.

Given that the show doesn't follow the book word for word, fans weren't sure if this moment would make it to the screen, but this new development makes it almost 100% clear that Meleys' fate is sealed.

They hope that the creators will portray the battle respectfully, with Vhagar and Sunfyre narrowly winning.

Fans also want the townspeople's reaction to the gruesome display to remain intact, as in the book they watched the dragon's head paraded through the town in fear, not joy, as it meant the war had begun.

A release date for House of the Dragon Season 2 has not yet been announced.
