Sometimes you don’t have to stick to canon all the time.

One of Young Sheldon ’s favorite games to play throughout the series’ prolonged hiatus is to find all the differences between the lore that they were provided in The Big Bang Theory and the events of Young Sheldon that the audience has witnessed. The show contradicts itself so many times, that some viewers prefer to ignore TBBT’s version of events altogether.

While some feel like the number of changes is ridiculous, and the producers should’ve at least tried to stick to canon a little, others believe it’s not necessary. Although there are some viewers who started watching Young Sheldon because of The Big Bang Theory’s success, the fandom has grown, and many people have joined just to watch Young Sheldon solely.

The way Sheldon’s childhood and the majority of characters were written in The Big Bang Theory was extremely one-dimensional. They were serving the purpose of developing the main plot and never were in focus enough to explore and develop their personalities and motivations.

Now that the writers have the opportunity to do that, it’s better to make a change that lets characters make irrational and out-of-character decisions for the sake of canon.

Do you mind the lore changes that were made in Young Sheldon?

Besides, with gems like George Cooper, so brilliantly portrayed by Lance Barber that he now is one of the fan-favorite characters in the whole series, and Billy the Bully, the prequel gave them a chance to change and shine. Billy’s arc in particular changed from being just a dumb bully to a very vulnerable kid, subject to constant criticism from his own mother.

Although some viewers believe that we are still up to see Billy’s villainous arc in season 7, when he could turn on Sheldon and become more violent toward him to match the description, he already won’t be the bland character he once was.

By allowing him to show his true colors and connect to the audience, the writers saved him from being a walking talking stereotype which is never enjoyable to watch.
