Hot Take: TBBT’s Penny Makes Sheldon Look Like a Decent Human Being

Sheldon gets a lot of hate for being a selfish, condescending person, but what about Penny?

The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon have shown us Sheldon Cooper over the years, and he has been pretty annoying since approximately the day he was born. One Reddit user believes that Penny might actually be worse.

Penny is selfish and mean at times, and she isn’t afraid to show it. She has put up with so much attitude from the guys and the girls over the years that it has made her crueler and more impatient. Who can blame her though? If we had lived with Sheldon as long as she had, we would probably have turned out the same way.

Penny and Leonard’s relationship is another thing. Mrs. Hofstadter is not too affectionate with her hubby. As the years go by, she starts throwing more snarky remarks than loving hugs at him.

Penny is supposedly no better to Amy either. She is frequently rude to her and not above hurting her feelings. Remember the dress shopping episode where Penny and Bernadette spend some quality time behind Amy’s back? That is just wrong.

However, Penny has also done a lot of nice things for everyone. She has managed to form a very touching friendship with Sheldon (even though he is not the easiest person to be around), she has stood up for Leonard on multiple occasions, and she has put up with Howard and Raj’s weird behavior for a couple of years.

Penny is the reason that Amy has loosened up enough to start living her life and get together with Sheldon in the end. Also, Penny and Bernadette do apologize to Amy in that episode when they realize how hurt Amy feels because of what they have done.

Most of the characters on The Big Bang Theory are complex. They all have flaws that make them realistic and relatable. If Penny were just a textbook girl-next-door type who could do no wrong, we probably wouldn’t have watched the show as long as we have.

Penny is not perfect, but she is alright. She is a supportive friend, an amazing wife, and a genuinely good person.
