Hot Take: She-Hulk Wasn’t Half as Bad as Secret Invasion
Marvel can benefit from leaning into comedy now.
There are not many great things to say about the state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe today. Although the studio continues to tease its fans with what sounds like epic projects, the reality is that viewers are left feeling confused and aimless during the entirety of the ongoing Phase 5.
The only thing that keeps people interested between the big movie releases is the TV series that Marvel manages to produce simultaneously.
Not only do they fill in the gaps and give the creators the freedom of expression that the length of a movie doesn't always allow, but they also entertain fans with slower-paced stories.
While Marvel's shows are often met with as much criticism as their movies, it's hard to deny the audience's fascination with them.
What's even more disappointing is when perfectly good comedic stories get lost in a universe that's in a shaky state at the time of their release.
Many fans believe that this is exactly what happened with She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a show starring Tatiana Maslany that was well-received by critics and yet absolutely bombed with audiences.
For a series with such a crazy disparity in Rotten Tomatoes scores (77% from critics versus 33% from the public), She-Hulk wasn't half as bad in reality.
Sloppy CGI done on a shoestring budget and a few cringe-worthy jokes don't make nearly as horrible an impression as Marvel's latest hit, Secret Invasion.
She-Hulk’s failure was nothing more than the fandom's heartfelt admission that it tends to take itself and the absurdity of the superhero world too seriously. By not embracing comedy and satire, we as an audience are sending a very wrong message that will get us stuck with over-the-top and way too boring stories.
If you think She-Hulk deserves a second chance, here is some good news for you: despite many negative reviews, the show hasn’t been officially canceled yet. Be sure to stay tuned for important news and updates, such as a season 2 renewal announcement.
