Hot Take: Sam And Dean Winchesters Were Never Enough To Keep Supernatural Fans Entertained
The show really should’ve ended on season 5.
Supernatural was truly one of the biggest shows of its time. Based on an interesting and quite original premise of two brothers exploring the world of the supernatural while slaying any demon that stands in their way, it immediately caught the attention of The CW audience and has grown into a huge platform over the years.
As the seasons went on, however, it became increasingly clear that it wasn't just Sam or Dean Winchester who kept viewers interested. It's basically everyone and everything around them. People who came for the brotherly love and the familiar conflict stayed for the iconic demon/angel duo, the charismatic villains, and the iconic shots of Baby.
The problem isn't necessarily with the characters of Sam and Dean, or the acting of Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles. Both actors gave great performances and made the most of the characters they were given. The real problem is that it is impossible to drag out the same sibling rivalry for 15 seasons without getting repetitive.
If you take a trip down memory lane and look back at seasons 7, 8, and 9 of the show, you will find that they all revolve around the same theme. While of course the whole relationship between Sam and Dean was predetermined by their past and only slightly altered by the journey they took together, the show had a completely different dynamic up until season 5.
And maybe that was the reason why Eric Kripke only had 5 seasons in mind when he worked on the show. Like many other shows on TV, Supernatural became a prisoner of its very active and demanding fanbase and continued even when it didn't really have anything new to say.
Fortunately, there were a number of characters who made the journey much more interesting and enjoyable. Their interactions with the brothers were much more entertaining, and some of them would probably even make for a fun spin-off.
If you are feeling nostalgic and want to rewatch Supernatural, repetitive or not, you can stream all 15 seasons of the show or any particular episode you like on Netflix.
