Hogwarts' Worst Matchmakers: The 5 Most Problematic Ships in Harry Potter Movies
There are many reasons why the Harry Potter franchise has become so popular all around the world. From unexpected plot twists and turns to iconic scenery, it has it all.
However, love and relationships are also very important components in any movie and Harry Potter is no exception.
Whether they are good or bad, the bonds shared by the characters build a story and add more dimension to each and every one of them.
That said, some relationships are a hit and others a complete miss – to the point where it's almost hard to watch them. But which ones do fans think are the most problematic? Let's take a look!
1. Harry and Cho Chang
We think many will agree that the first ship to make it to our list has to be Harry and Cho Chang. Harry might be the chosen one, but that doesn't, by any means, help him in his relationships.
And his involvement with Cho Chang was simply annoying to watch at times, though in theory, it could've had potential. The start was already messy, and their lack of genuine chemistry made everyone question how they could be attracted to each other.
They clearly seemed unhappy and awkward in each other's presence. Not to mention all the unaddressed trauma and their inability to handle it!
2. James and Lily Potter
Now, some fans might argue with us about this one but we think Lily and James's union was a bit problematic, despite being loved by many viewers. Why? Well, first of all, we've seen that James can be quite cruel, especially when it comes to Snape.
Secondly, what makes the situation even worse is that Lily used to be friends with Snape and saw how James tormented him. Sure, Snape wasn't a saint either but can James's actions really be justified?
She decided to overlook his horrible behavior and started dating him anyway, despite Snape having to see her with the guy who treated him so badly.
This shows that their relationship required them to put some morals aside, which is not a very good base for a healthy marriage.
3. Ron and Hermione
Don't get us wrong, Hermione and Ron's relationship is iconic, no doubt. But while it was clear to some viewers that they were going to end up together at some point, that doesn't mean the pairing wasn't problematic.
They have little in common outside of their childhood experiences and they are polar opposites when it comes to personalities. So much so that fans have said they're like oil and water.
What's more, throughout their entire relationship, they treat each other terribly, and the whole “if they argue, it means they love each other” trope missed the mark. It was already hard to imagine them being good friends, let alone romantic partners!
4. Ginny Weasley and Harry
The majority of the fans say that the Harry and Ginny pairing feels forced, and we couldn't agree more. The relationship practically came out of nowhere and lacked realistic development.
The weirdest part was that Harry didn't really show any signs of being attracted to Ginny until the moment he saw her kissing Dean. It was only then that he suddenly fell head over heels for her.
Usually, all events related to Harry build up and unravel in front of the viewer as he is the main protagonist. This romance, however, was never portrayed properly, and the dynamic was a bit unclear.
Now, Ginny may understand Harry, but what about Harry? Fans say it almost feels as if he had this supporter and got used to having her around.
5. Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks
Many viewers were taken by surprise when Tonks and Lupin got together as it was very out of character for both. It all seemed a bit forced because Lupin didn't want a relationship and was pressured into accepting it.
He literally tried to escape when he found out about Tonks's pregnancy. If that doesn't scream he wasn't ready for any of this, we don't know what does!
This situation, of course, wasn't good for either of them as the man Tonks was so in love with didn't properly return her feelings.
Though their love story was more of a subplot, it didn't add that much to their character development either. In fact, some fans say the characters became pretty boring.
