This is the best pop-culture reference yet.

One of the best things about The Boys is the way the show has very high stakes yet remains deeply unserious. With so many moments ranging from the sad to the truly disturbing, the writers know exactly how to balance it all with humor and keep the viewer sitting down to watch more.

Of course, with the premise being a satire on the superhero genre, there's no way the show could have been made completely serious. But it's the attention to detail even in the throwaway jokes that makes fans so attached to the show and its characters.

Homelander Smash Mouth Reference

Given all three seasons that The Boys has already released, the viewers have learned to expect the unexpectable when it comes to the show. Even the most insane fantasy or headcanon may turn out to be true if that benefits the narrative. That is especially true when it comes to the eccentric yet horrifying character of Homelander.

In the first clip of season 4 that has been recently released to the viewers, Homelander drops one of his funniest lines to date, saying he ‘does not want to miss Smash Mouth’.

While there is nothing wrong with loving Smash Mouth as a band, we all know which soundtrack brought them the most success. And if somebody once told Homelander about Shreck, he could easily have become obsessed with it. Redditor Ironbloodedgundam23 has come up with a theory as to how this could happen:

“I have a feeling that Shrek was one the first proper movies he watched. Like he was isolated throughout the 90s they just filled him with American propaganda. Shrek came out in 2001 so he probably saw that and was transfixed like a child. I can imagine Edgar getting reports like “Homelander is still quoting Shrek,” they said.

Since this was just a moment from the teaser that caught the viewer's attention, it is entirely possible that The Boys will mention the iconic character in the same body of dialogue. No one would put it past the show to make the most ridiculous yet hilarious revelations about its characters.

Whether you think fans have just uncovered the darkest secret of Homelander's favorite movie of all time, or you just think he might be a Smash Mouth fan (which would have been just as hilarious), be sure to tune in to The Boys season 4 premiere on Prime Video on June 13.
