Here’s What Made Grey’s Anatomy’s Meredith and Derek Replacement So Hard to Watch
No one could even come close.
Grey's Anatomy has never been a show for the weak. While there are plenty of medical cases where the doctors are helpless in the face of advancing disease, there is also plenty of interpersonal drama that never gets any better. If you're looking for sunshine and rainbows, this is not the show for you.
However, the drama quality can vary greatly. Some stories are relatable and compelling, making you root for characters who have the perfect chemistry to end up together. Others, created purely to fill screen time with some sort of storyline, are so boring that they're hard to watch and better skipped.
Will Grey’s Anatomy’s Simone and Lukas Get Together?
Back in season 19, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital welcomed a new group of interns, including the bubbly and sweet Simone Griffith and Lucas Adams, Derek and Amelia Shepherd's nephew. It was pretty obvious that the show would develop them into their own characters, but no one expected Simone and Lucas to become the new MerDer.
As if Lucas’ relation to Shepherds wasn't enough, Lucas and Simone's relationship went into the same territory that Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd went through in the first season. The constant will-they-won't-they was made considerably more difficult by everyone around them. But, it is safe to say that the new couple did not pull it off.
When discussing the most disappointing storylines of season 20, viewers on the r/greysanatomy subreddit pointed out how bored they were with Simone and Lucas and their never-ending angst.
As Redditor Teodoro2404 pointed out, there is one big difference that makes them far worse than Meredith and Derek ever were.
“Simone and Adams feel like they never had their peace period. They couldn't be together at first, then Simone got engaged, then she broke off her engagement and instead of finally being together they just found another reason not to. So we never fell in love with them, if anything, both of them annoy me, and I hope they stop pushing them together,” the user said.
Some of the show's most iconic couples, like Meredith and Derek, Mark and Lexie, Callie and Arizona, have all had their fair share of trials. Some of them ended up together, stronger than ever, and others' stories ended in tragedy, but they all had a chance to be together for a while, to have fun, and to let their chemistry shine through.
Without those sweet moments of happiness, the struggle that Grey's Anatomy puts Simone and Lucas through feels meaningless and boring.
However, if you are still interested in seeing where the show takes them in season 21, be sure to keep an eye out for all the news and exciting behind-the-scenes updates to be the first to know the show's return date.
