Here's Why Matthew McConaughey Walked Away from a Major MCU Movie

Matthew McConaughey is, without a doubt, one of the most prominent actors of his generation and in Hollywood in general. He has a phenomenal portfolio of movies and TV series, he’s a world-class superstar and a welcome addition to any project. However, McConaughey himself is quite picky about the roles he wants.

Apparently, the actor was offered to join one of the biggest MCU projects — Guardians of the Galaxy, but he refused!

It was back when the second installment of the franchise was in its pre-production stage, and McConaughey had two options: one was Gunn’s offer, and the other one was joining the adaptation of Stephen King ’s Dark Tower.

While it might sound somewhat counterintuitive, the actor went with the second option and decided not to take the MCU project. Even though working with Marvel is a dream for many performers, it was certainly not the case for Matthew McConaughey. Speaking with PlayBoy in 2016, the actor explained the reason behind his decision.

“I like Guardians of the Galaxy, but what I saw was ‘It’s successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.’ I’d feel like an amendment,” McConaughey shared.

Instead of working with Marvel, the actor pursued his vision of the perfect Dark Tower adaptation as it looked like more fun.

“The Dark Tower script was well written, I like the director [Nikolaj Arcel] and his take on it, and I can be the creator, the author of the Man in Black — aka the Devil — in my version of this Stephen King novel. <...> I enjoyed approaching my character as if I were the Devil having a good time, getting turned on by exposing human hypocrisies,” the actor explained.

Unfortunately, we don’t know what Guardians of the Galaxy character could’ve been played by Matthew McConaughey, but it doesn’t really matter at this point, either. The True Detective star made his choice and never joined the MCU… Which might be a good thing — but sadly, his Dark Tower failed at the box office. At least, he had fun!
