Here's Why Marvel Seems to Be Running Out of Multiverse Steam in 'Doctor Strange' Sequel
Introducing the multiverse seemed like a fun idea… for the first couple of times.
After 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness', many fans seem to grow more and more disappointed – not in the characters or the story, but rather the general concept of the multiverse and how it works in the MCU.
In previous movies where the whole concept of multiverse was explored, it had certain elements of surprise and suspense. But in 'Multiverse of Madness', it seems like the fact that there is a bunch of alternate worlds just does not impact anything, nor does it make things more interesting.
For instance, some fans believe that, even compared to 'Loki ' and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', 'Multiverse of Madness' does not explore anything new regarding variants and dimensions. In 'No Way Home', we had variants of Peter Parker played by three different actors, just like in 'Loki', where some of the variants were even female… or alligator.
'Multiverse of Madness' offers us several takes on Doctor Strange, but they are all pretty much the same: with all of them portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch, every single one of them has powers, is sarcastic and smart and only differs when it comes to clothes and hairstyle.
Same goes for pretty much everyone whose variants appear in the movie: Wanda Maximoff, her kids and even Strange's ex-girlfriend Christine Palmer.
Given that the multiverse is definitely not going anywhere after the 'Doctor Strange' sequel, Marvel might have to try and expand the possibilities of alternate worlds while also somehow managing to stick to the logic of events. This sounds like a serious challenge, but also an incredible opportunity to introduce more characters and explore more worlds… of course, if the studio does have something in its multiverse store left to surprise us.
