Here's Why In Supernatural Fandom We Don't Talk About Sam
No special treatment for a special boy.
Summary:
- Supernatural was an iconic fantasy horror show on The CW that ran for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020.
- The show followed two demon-fighting brothers on their adventures across the country.
- However, over time, the younger brother, Sam, has lost the favor of the fandom due to poor writing choices.
It's always annoying when, in an ensemble show, one character gets way more attention than the other. It's even more annoying when it happens in shows where there are only two main characters and plenty of screen time for either of them to shine. This is exactly what fans feel has happened with Supernatural.
And if you think that more than three years after the show ended, the fandom was able to forgive and forget, you'd be completely wrong. It's just too hard not to get bitter about Dean every time you watch it.
Things have gotten so bad that the fandom has turned its anger on the writers by quietly deciding to simply ignore whatever happens next with Sam Winchester's storyline. This is Supernatural-style protest.
Why Do People Dislike Sam Winchester?
As a character, Sam Winchester wasn't much better or worse than his brother Dean. They always had different personalities and aspired to different things in life, but that never made anyone turn against one or the other and never caused any major hatred.
By paying too much attention to Sam and pointing out that he was special, they only managed to make the character less appealing. Eventually, the dislike got to the point where people wanted to focus their discussions on anything but Sam.
“Dean's trauma in hell was delegated to an episode and scene sprinkled in here and there in season 4 and quickly forgotten about. Sam's trauma in the cage was given a season long arc about how once again he was special and needed to be saved,” Redditor HappyChaosOfTheNorth said.
Sam's decision not to go looking for his brother in Purgatory in Season 8, instead settling for a quiet life, caused even more anger towards the character.
To this day, the decision continues to cause confusion among fans. It's hard to imagine a world where Dean would abandon his quest to find Sam, but that kind of determination doesn't go both ways. The more the writers favored one character over the other, the more the viewers tried to restore justice the only way they could.
In reality, both brothers, as well as their sidekicks, fell victim to inconsistent and lazy writing choices more times than one can count. However, if you still feel nostalgic for Supernatural and want to throw a rewatch marathon for the show, you can go ahead and stream all 15 seasons on Netflix.
