Looks like House of the Dragon will be getting a new dragon rider!

Summary

  • House of the Dragon Season 2 will be released on HBO in exactly one month.
  • In the meantime, information about Rhaena's development has been leaked.
  • Her arc may borrow plot points from one character from the book.

In less than a month, the highly anticipated House of the Dragon Season 2 will premiere on HBO. House of the Dragon, a prequel to GoT based on the fictional historical chronicle Fire and Blood, tells the story of a blood-soaked conflict that erupted in the lands of Westeros two centuries earlier, no less deadly than the main events of the original series.

And the closer we get to the premiere, the more intriguing updates and insider information we get. A few days ago, one of the insiders released a very remarkable leak regarding Damon's daughter Rhaena. Let's find out what this leak is and what it could mean for the Season 2 plot.

What is the Rhaena Season 2 Leak?

While HBO hasn't released any information, George R.R. Martin himself, who serves as a consultant, supervisor and executive producer on the series, has opened up on his personal blog about how House of the Dragon will consist of multiple seasons.

'It is going to take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do justice to the Dance of the Dragons, from start to finish,' the author wrote. Well, the upcoming season will only have 8 episodes, but we have no reason not to believe Martin.

We should expect no small amount of intrigue, as well as the growth of many characters. Including those whose storylines were not so well developed in Season 1. Among them is Rhaena, the daughter of Prince Daemon Targaryen and his first wife, Lady Laena Velaryon.

According to the Twitter account Wake the Dragon, which provides plot analysis and insider information about the series, Season 2 will provide Rhaena with a long-awaited dragon, as per the May 14, 2024 post.

Rhaena has dreamed of becoming a dragon rider since childhood, but her dragon egg never hatched, even though she kept it near the fire. Later, she resented Aemond for getting her mother's dragon, Vhagar, but it only led to more tension between the two. And in the coming season, it looks like she'll be able to become a full-fledged warrior like her ancestors.

What Does This Mean for the Upcoming Events in Season 2?

If the information from Wake the Dragon is true, the show will have a number of changes from the original novel. And those familiar with the Fire & Blood storyline will know what we're talking about.

The Targaryens and Vellarions are far from the only dragon riders. And so it looks like Rhaena will get the plot development that belonged in Nettles' book, the rider of the dragon Sheepstealer. And from the looks of it, 'a sheep-eating wild dragon' is exactly who he is.

Notably, in the books, Rhaena herself still had her own hatching dragon, the pale pink she-dragon Morning. However, it has been speculated that Nettles may be either a lover or a daughter figure to Daemon, so it makes sense that the close dynamic between the two dragonriders would carry over to Rhaena and Daemon.

Furthermore, based on the show's plot alone, all of this suggests that Rhaena's fate will mirror that of her father, even though Daemon did not pay much attention to his daughter because she was not a Dragon Rider. Now it looks like we're in for a mature character who will join her father in scaring all of Westeros on a powerful dragon. With that comes risk, as Rhaena had a relatively happy ending in the books. But will she survive the Dragon Dance?

Well, we can only wait for House of the Dragon Season 2, which will premiere on HBO on June 16, 2024.
