Here's How 1923 Connects to 1883 and Yellowstone
1923, Paramount's second sequel to Yellowstone, premieres later this month and has what can only be described as a star-studded cast.
Actors featuring in the show include the legendary Harrison Ford, Dame Helen Mirren, James Badge Dale, former Bond Timothy Dalton, and Jerome Flynn, to name but a few.
The first prequel, 1883, introduced James and Margaret Dutton (Tim McGraw and Faith Hill), who sadly lost their daughter while bravely taking on the Oregon Trail. She was subsequently buried in Montana, in the place that would go on to become the Dutton Ranch in Yellowstone.
In 1923, Ford plays Jacob Dutton, the brother of James. Jacob is married to Cara Dutton, played by Helen Mirren. The couple are living on the Dutton Ranch with Jacob employed helping his older brother, John Dutton Sr. (later John Dutton I) to run the ranch.
John Dutton Sr, played by James Badge Dale, will later become known as John Dutton I. After the end of the previous sequel, James and Margaret had another son who they named Spencer. The younger brother, played by Brandon Sklenar, will also feature in the new series.
John Dutton Sr. marries Emma Dutton (Marley Shelton) and they have a son called Jack who is played by Darren Mann. Jack Dutton will marry Elizabeth Strafford (Michelle Randolph), and they will be the parents of John Dutton II who we saw portrayed by Dabney Coleman in the second season finale of Yellowstone.
John Dutton II is the father of John Dutton III who was played by Kevin Costner and was the lead character in Yellowstone.
So, the family tree looks like this:
- James Dutton (Tim McGraw) is the father of John Dutton Sr (James Badge Dale).
- John Dutton Sr (aka John Dutton I) is the father of Jack Dutton (Darren Mann), who is the father of John Dutton II (Dabney Coleman).
- And John Dutton II is the father of Kevin Costner's character, John Dutton III.
Going back to the start of that tree, James Dutton has a brother, Jacob, played by Harrison Ford who, as far as we know, doesn't have any surviving children.
1923 appears to be the story of a range war between Yellowstone and its neighbouring Stafford Ranch after the latter is bought by Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton). Stafford is the former home of Elizabeth who will go on to marry Jack.
