Here's a Homophobic Line That Was Removed in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man'
While some countries censor movies for featuring LGBTQ+ characters, the British ITV network decided to go in a very opposite direction.
During the April 23 broadcast of ITV2, when the network aired Sam Raimi 's superhero classic 'Spider-Man', there was a certain line that went missing, as noted by Variety.
"That's a cute outfit. Did your husband give it to you?" Tobey Maguire 's Peter Parker originally says to his opponent during a wrestling competition. However, ITV axed the "husband" part, leaving Peter saying "That's a cute outfit" only.
Explaining its decision to Variety, ITV said it "carefully consider[s] the suitability of content we broadcast and appropriateness of language used to ensure that it meets audience expectations, especially when intended for family viewing."
Apparently, the "husband" punchline was considered homophobic, but the move to censor the all-time classic under this pretext seemed bizarre to many fans.
People called on TV networks to air their beloved movies without editing lines out.
