Henry Cavill Faced Massive Backlash After Choosing Tom Cruise Over DC
At one point in his career, Henry Cavill had to make a tough choice, and he found what seemed like the perfect compromise…but still received quite a backlash.
Henry Cavill ’s career has been nothing short of outstanding in the past decade, and while the actor had had quite a few projects prior to it, it was the role of Superman that launched him to international stardom.
After putting on the red cape, Cavill unlocked oh so many doors in the movie industry for himself, it was a breakthrough!
Since Henry first assumed the role of the Man of Steel back in 2013, he was also part of Justice League.
The infamous movie failed disastrously after being taken over by Joss Whedon, and the end result, the co-called Josstice League, was (and still is) generally hated by the fans. After starring in it, Cavill moved on to a new project.
This was a fantastic opportunity: the actor bagged the role of the main antagonist in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Working with Tom Cruise was another major milestone in the actor’s career, and he was happy with that…until Zach Snyder reached out to him and said they were going to reshoot Justice League with him back in charge.
Of course, Henry was contractually obliged to join the project — and he wanted to participate, too, since it was a chance to turn his previous movie into the great feat it was always supposed to be.
However, there was a complication: for his role in Fallout, Cavill grew a mustache, and he couldn’t get rid of it for Snyder’s movie.
The fake mustache wouldn’t have worked due to all the stunts the actor had to perform in Mission: Impossible, so instead, it was DC who had to remove his facial hair with CGI.
This decision predictably caused a massive backlash from the fans, but Henry Cavill approached the matter stoically and refused to react to that.
“As you will see when the movie comes out, to have a fake moustache on would not have been a possibility. You’ll think, ‘Okay, yeah, a fake moustache would perhaps have been blown off in this situation.’ Unfortunately, it led to much dismay when Justice League came out, but that’s the nature of these things. You can’t win every time,” explained the actor.
It’s funny to recall just how much the fans were frustrated with a CGI-removed mustache back in the day. Now, almost every shot in superhero movies consists of CGI for like 90%, and the general audience doesn’t seem to mind…. The debate about whether it’s even cinema at this point is, however, quite heated.
