Fans are devastated to learn how much better James Mangold's movie could have been compared to the TV series The Book of Boba Fett.

When The Book of Boba Fett TV series was released, many fans were disappointed, as while it wasn't outright terrible, the show felt extremely underwhelming for such an iconic Star Wars character. And a recent update on the cancelled movie about the legendary bounty hunter only seems to add insult to injury.

Even before the show went into production, James Mangold, best known for 2017's Logan and the just-released Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, was tapped to direct a solo movie about Boba Fett, which was later canceled.

Now, while speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director revealed just how drastically different his vision for the movie was compared to other Star Wars projects.

According to Mangold, it was going to be a "borderline R-rated, single-planet spaghetti Western," which probably scared everyone at the time.

James also said that if he had been allowed to go through with the movie, there would have been no chance to "'embrace Baby Yoda" (Grogu) because he "didn't really belong in the world I was kind of envisioning."

Fans are absolutely bummed about this, as they feel it sounds a lot more like a Boba Fett story than the one we eventually got in the TV show.

Although the chances of ever getting an R-rated Star Wars project are extremely slim, it would have been absolutely great to see such a darker take on the bounty hunter, and it is an utter shame for fans that Disney is so focused on preserving the family-friendly image of the franchise.

Which is actually sad and a little confusing, because it is obvious that no one is talking about, say, Django Unchained levels of blood and violence, but the company seems so obsessed with keeping Star Wars as mild as possible for some reason.

We still get the occasional dark and serious story, like the Andor TV series, or borderline war crimes in the Star Wars universe, like some episodes of The Clone Wars animated series, not to mention limbs and heads being chopped off by lightsabers.

So it's extremely disappointing that the creators can't take it a little further, when some of the darkest moments in the franchise are often considered among the best and most mature.

Star Wars is not just about being kid-friendly, and maybe one day the creators will have more freedom to branch out, as they already do on a limited basis.

Hopefully, Mangold will get a chance to bring at least some of his vision to the upcoming Star Wars film about the first Jedi that he will direct. No further details about the movie, including the title and release date, have been announced.
