Fans lament how close they came to seeing Henry in the role they believe he was born to play.

With Daniel Craig 's time as the legendary James Bond coming to an end in 2021 with No Time to Die, fans have been theorizing, speculating and betting on who will play 007 next.

And among the multitude of names, one continues to pop up from time to time — Henry Cavill. But apparently not everyone is aware that the actor applied for the role back in 2005 and even managed to end up between the two finalists.

In a recent interview with Express.co.uk, Martin Campbell, who directed Casino Royale, for which Cavill applied, revealed that the actor, who was only 22 years old at the time, absolutely nailed the audition, which made the final decision especially difficult.

According to the filmmaker, Henry's acting was "tremendous" and if not for the existence of Craig, he "would have made an excellent Bond."

Unfortunately, it seems that Cavill was a bit too chubby and looked too young at the time, so the role eventually went to Daniel Craig.

However, he may still end up playing it, at least if he is signed to play in three movies, which will put him in the same situation as Craig.

Cavill is 40 now, so it could take about six years of his life, which would make him about 50 by the time of the third movie, and Craig was 53 during No Time to Die.

However, in a bitter twist of irony, it seems that Henry's age now reduces his chances of becoming the next Bond.

But some fans are still clinging to hope, saying that he was born to play 007, which became even more apparent after his performance in 2015's The Man from U.N.C.L.E., in which Cavill was absolutely fantastic.

So who knows, maybe we'll see his long overdue portrayal of the iconic spy after all, although no official announcements have been made as of yet.
