The first season of the series Somebody Somewhere, starring Bridget Everett, premiered on HBO in 2022 – and went almost unnoticed. It seems like a very local story: a woman in the midst of a midlife crisis tries to find herself in a small Kansas town.
But the second season, released in the spring of 2023, proves that the search for meaning and family dramas are similar all over the world, and Somebody Somewhere is such a good show that it can't be missed.

What Is Somebody Somewhere About?
At 40, Sam feels like a person who has achieved nothing. Moreover, she has not realized her main talent–- she has a rare, amazing voice that has been noticed since childhood, but she has not sung professionally for a long time.
Sam devoted the last year of her life to caring for her sister, who was dying of cancer, and now lives in another sister's house in Manhattan – only not in the middle of New York, but in a small town in Kansas, trying to survive the loss and find herself again. But it is hard when nothing ever happens where you live, just like in your life.
Somebody Somewhere's Story Is Almost Autobiographical
The story told in Somebody Somewhere is largely autobiographical: the main character is played by comedian Bridget Everett, who also grew up in a small town in Kansas. She also went through a midlife crisis, which is why her Sam seems so authentic.
But unlike the character, who doubts and is embarrassed by her gift, Everett is living her best life. After working as a waitress, in a cabaret, and in karaoke, she is now an actress, a famous comedian, and performs with her own musical group.
The most amazing thing about Somebody Somewhere is that this show could look like a hopelessly dark story about people living in a godforsaken place, but it is actually an incredibly bright series about friendship, mutual aid, and the ability to find your people everywhere.
And about the fact that people who are different for whatever reason are often left alone, especially in places like a small town in Kansas. But the story of Sam and her friends shows the opposite: unity can be found in otherness.
