All thanks to its authenticity.

Throughout the years on modern TV, police procedurals have always been a frequent choice for an evening watch due to its compelling and action-packed storylines, remembering the genre’s CBS giant NCIS that’s been on air for decades will be enough in this case.

Despite being based on the existing system of police work across the world, such shows are still created from scratch, basing its plot only on the general idea of such an environment. Still, however good NCIS may seem to its long-time fans, another similar show back in the day surely captivated millions of viewers thanks to its real-life story.

HBO’s crime drama The Wire had its television run from 2002 to 2008 and, just like other police procedurals, turned all of its attention to a specific problem of drug use in the US, but with a different approach. The show initially was created by David Simon who had drawn a lot of inspiration from his writing partner Ed Burns’ experience as a former homicide detective.

Diving deeper into the smallest details of the detective’s everyday life, with its ups and downs, as well as the pretty much ordinary things to do, The Wire comes as a kind of educational material rather than just a crime drama series with an intriguing plot.

On top of that, The Wire doesn’t really put its focus only on the police department going further and exploring the relationship between police and the local government in Baltimore, where all the storyline unfolds.

While many other shows alike tend to portray police workers as infallible guardians of the common citizens’ peace, The Wire happens to be extremely honest about the department’s dark secrets that every so often prove its employees’ ability to serve their own good rather than everyone else's.

Despite being over for more than a decade now, The Wire is still an undeniable leader when it comes to authentic and well-written police procedural drama shows.

With all the storyline’s over-dramatization, most modern shows wouldn’t be able to come even close to what The Wire offers its viewers — sadly, even NCIS isn’t that good after all.
