The Mirror of Erised merely reveals a person's strongest desire, but for Harry and Ron, it genuinely predicted their future, like the latter thought.

Summary:

  • Ron once guessed that the Mirror of Erised predicted a person's future, which wasn't true but worked for Harry and Ron.
  • Harry, who wished to meet his relatives and be part of a family, met his parents and Sirius and became part of the Weasley family.
  • Ron, who wanted to distinguish himself at Hogwarts and among his siblings, became a Prefect and helped destroy Voldemort.

Back when Harry and Ron first found the Mirror of Erised, the latter guessed that it showed a person's future. Albus Dumbledore, of course, revealed the artifact's true purpose, but Ron wasn't too far off, too.

While the Mirror didn't predict everyone's future, it certainly did so for Harry and Ron. How did that happen, you may ask?

Back when J.K. Rowling was still writing a kids' book, the Mirror of Erised's name was a smart but obvious way of foreshadowing the artifact's purpose: it saw a person's deepest desire and showed it in the magical reflection. What did Harry and Ron see in the Mirror?

Harry, a boy without a family, saw himself surrounded by a big and happy bunch of Potters, standing among many generations of his ancestors. Above all, Harry wanted to meet his real family and become part of it like he was always supposed to but didn't thanks to Voldemort.

Ron, the youngest son of his family, grew up in the shadow of his exceptional brothers. Feeling neglected and insignificant, Ron saw himself having every possible Hogwarts award and student position and being the greatest of all the Weasley brothers; someone to look up to.

In a weird way, the Mirror of Erised predicted both boys' future as for Harry and Ron, their deepest desires manifested into reality.

How Did Harry and Ron's Desires Come True?

Harry Potter dreamed of two things: getting to know his ancestors and having a large and happy family. Both his desires came true in the end.

First, Harry met his godfather, Sirius Black, and for just a few years, he had a real relative who cared about him. Later, thanks to the Resurrection Stone, he even met James and Lily Potter, his parents, which was so unlikely and yet, it happened just as the Mirror had shown.

Second, Harry found and founded a new family for himself. The Weasley take The Boy Who Lived in and treat him like another son in their big and wholesome household, and later, Harry marries Ginny and starts a household of his own with a loving wife and three beautiful children.

Ron Weasley wished for making it big at Hogwarts and distinguishing himself from his talented siblings. Again, both his desires were met.

First, he achieved many things at Hogwarts. Just like he wished, he became a Prefect and had all the chances to become a Head Boy on his seventh year. He also helped Gryffindor win the House Cup and the Quidditch Cup many times over, making him popular and respected.

Second, while his elder brothers were great, Ron did become the greatest Weasley. As a crucial member of the Golden Trio, he fought many battles against the Death Eaters, destroyed a Horcrux, and helped The Boy Who Lived rid the Magical Britain of the Dark Lord's tyranny.

Of course, Harry and Ron's desires were not manifested into reality by the Mirror of Erised; it was thanks to their own efforts that they became who they were in the epilogue, and we're not taking their achievements away from them. Still, the Mirror predicted their future, in some sense.
