Harry Potter Movies Screwed This Character Up in Hermione’s Favor, and Reddit Hates It
The moment when “the book vs the movie” discussion is completely reasonable.
Summary:
- Ginny Weasley, one of the central characters of the Harry Potter books, is almost invisible and unmemorable in the movie franchise.
- Played by Bonnie Wright, she lacks her outstanding traits of character, which seems to be the result of the unfair reduction of Ginny’s movie line.
- There is a fan assumption that it was done to make Hermione a brighter heroine.
The Harry Potter movie franchise’s creators were supposed to feature the content of J.K. Rowling’s seven eventful novels at their very best, obviously leaving something behind the films. This negatively affected the onscreen line of Ginny Weasley, Ron’s little sister and Harry’s love interest and future wife, who was portrayed by Bonnie Wright.
Despite her being so close to the main character’s trio, her total movie presence was only 30 minutes throughout all 8 films, which didn’t reveal her personality at all. All people who read the original novels can recall that Ginny is described as fiery, self-confident and quite a witty girl, who could punch with both her words and magic.
Ginny’s bright character always stood out in the books, while on screen she is featured as a shallow, timid “gray mouse”, and the actress’ red hair doesn’t fix the situation. More than that, the movies completely ignore her passion for Quidditch and her friendship with Hermione and Luna, also not showing the roots of her and Harry’s love story.
It is quite clear for all that the franchise’s screenwriters couldn’t put the whole Ginny’s book line in the movies and the reduction of her appearance is reasonable. However, the most part of the fandom is sure the point here is also in Wright’s poor acting skills, which wasn’t so obvious at the start of the production, combining with the creators paying less attention to her character and making her simply a part of the background.
Besides, fans massively claim that Ginny’s book character was literally merged with the one of Hermione, which resulted in the onscreen emptiness of Wright’s heroine.
It is also supported by the assumption, voiced by Redditor @Upper-Respond-8072, that the franchise’s screenwriter, Steve Kloves, focused mostly on Hermione and “didn’t care about anything that didn’t make his superwoman and favorite ship look good”.
“Bad casting + bad acting + bad direction + bad writing from a screenwriter who only cared about Hermione = Movie Ginny,” reads Reddit’s verdict for this heroine.
Whether the movie version of Ginny was actually so neglected or not, nowadays we can barely imagine the Harry Potter movies without Bonnie Wright’s performance.
The whole magic saga is available for rewatching on Prime Video .
