The Harry Potter movies changed a great many things about the original story and characters, but Ron Weasley suffered from them the most. Here’s how bad it was.

In J.K. Rowling’s books, every member of the Golden Trio was essential both in everyday life and in the fight against Voldemort. The movies severely downplayed Harry and Ron’s importance, turning Hermione into a supergirl with all the answers, instead — but Ron indisputably suffered from that treatment the most.

Here are the seven crucial parts of Ron’s lovable personality that were completely cut from the movies, turning the youngest Weasley brother into a dead weight.

7. Ron Was Sassy, Sarcastic, and Funny

The Book Ronald Weasley rarely found himself at a loss for words: no matter the situation, he always had a witty comeback or quip. Reading Ron’s comments was always a pleasure — but in the movies, his sass was reduced to zero. The only joke coming from the redhead in the movies was Ron himself, and that’s just sad.

6. Ron Was the Perfect Couple for Hermione

The books allow us to watch the development of Ron’s feelings for Hermione for years — and they also show just why the two are perfect for each other. The movies, as usual, downplayed Ron in this regard, focusing on Harry and Hermione’s chemistry for some reason; Ron and Hermione felt random and unnatural there.

5. Ron Gave His All to Support Harry

Harry Potter ’s life was no treat, and in the books, Ronald Weasley was always there for him except for two dramatic cases. Caring about his bud was a priority for Ron as his best friend. In the movies, Ron definitely had the “emotional range of a teaspoon” as Harry’s woes passed unnoticed or uncared for by him. He was just eating nearby.

4. Ron Became a True Brother for Harry

In another side effect of the movies focusing on Harry and Hermione for some ungodly reason, Ron and Harry’s relationship was nowhere near as close as in the books. The two of them were like spiritual brothers, a pair of siblings with the classic familial support and fallouts. The movies failed to even remotely capture that.

3. Ron’s Problems Were Real and Justified

The Book Ron was a person with real problems that were properly addressed. He had his reasons to complain and be anxious or furious; the Movie Ron saw no such treatment. The Harry Potter movies always made Ron look like a whiny egoist whenever he voiced his issues, and that painted him in a terrible light for no reason.

2. Ron Saved the Trio Many Times

As a native of the Wizarding World, Ron not only knew more than his friends but also came up with great ideas in times of need. The Book Ron saved the Golden Trio’s necks countless times — but in the movies, he was more of an appendix to the group. All viable ideas were transferred to Harry and, for the most part, Hermione.

1. Ron Was an Experienced Wizard

We don’t mean it in a way that Ron was Dumbledore (scrap that theory already!), but he was born into a wizarding family and his experience and knowledge about the Wizarding World carried the Trio many times in the books. In the movies, it was often disregarded: for instance, even his explanation about “Mud-bloods” was somehow made by the Muggleborn Hermione instead of Ron who knew exactly what it meant.

What are we singing today?
