Titanic could've been a whole different movie.

It's hard to imagine Titanic any other way today.

James Cameron 's iconic 1997 film was so good, in fact, that it grossed $1.8 billion at the international box office and forever stayed in the hearts of audiences as the most tragic love story ever filmed.

Both Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in the film, received much praise from both audiences and critics, as the movie brought them universal recognition.

Although Kate Winslet's career was boosted by the role of Dewitt Bukater and she had a lot of doors open in front of her, she also got a lot of hate, mostly focused on her looks and weight.

Unfortunately, this is the fate that awaits any young actress who is faced with so much attention. However, the reception could have been different if another actress had taken her place.

Gwyneth Paltrow was one of many who tried and allegedly got to the later stages of the audition only to turn it down. However, the actress doesn't seem to regret her decision:

"I look back at the choices I've made and think, 'Why the hell did I say yes to that? And no to that?' And you know, you look at the big picture and think: There's a universal lesson here, what good is it to hold onto roles?" the actress said on Howard Stern's show.

What's even more interesting is that Rose wasn't the only one who was considered different: Leonardo DiCaprio wasn't the first or only choice to play Jack either.

Even though he looked perfect on screen in a final cut, many names like Chris O'Donnell, Billy Crudup and Stephen Dorff were passed around between the producers and the studio.

One of the main contenders was Matthew McConaughey, who actually auditioned with Kate Winslet and came very close to getting the part.

Luckily for the audience and the production team, James Cameron's vision for Titanic came together perfectly, and the cast that was assembled for it went to great lengths to make it perfect.

If you want to see Titanic again, you can stream it on Disney Plus.
