Guillermo del Toro is one of the most outstanding storytellers in the history of cinema and one of the most famous Mexican directors of our time. del Toro is best known for his solo films, which in one way or another revolve around horror, childhood fears, fairy tales and, of course, monsters.
Frankenstein Movie Is del Toro's Longtime Dream
It was the latter that made Guillermo a cult favorite among movie buffs, and became an important part of his unique directing style. So it comes as no surprise that del Toro ended up taking on the story of one of the most famous mysterious characters of all time, Frankenstein, especially since he has been dreaming about making this movie since the 2000s.
The project was originally part of the director's four-film deal with Universal, which, in addition to Frankenstein, also included adaptations of Robert Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, and Dan Simmons’ Drood. But to this day, viewers have not seen any of the projects once planned.
New Cast of Frankenstein
We already know that the lead role of Dr. Frankenstein himself will be played by Oscar Isaac, the star of Dune and Moon Knight, and the role of his romantic interest will be played by Mia Goth, the main scream queen of our generation.
Andrew Garfield was originally set to play the Monster, but he dropped out of the cast due to scheduling conflicts and was replaced by Jacob Elordi (yes, we're as excited as you are), who became even more popular after the release of Saltburn.
Christoph Waltz, best known for his role as Hans Landa in Quentin Tarantino 's Inglourious Basterds, will reportedly play Dr. Pretorius, the main antagonist of the classic Bride of Frankenstein.
What Will del Toro's Frankenstein Be About?
The story will revolve around the plot of the classic 1818 novel written by Mary Shelley Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. Over the course of two centuries, there have been countless works that directly retell the novel or use its motifs. But del Toro's masterful hand must once again bring the monster to life and present it in its best and most terrifying light.
Mary Shelley's story can easily be considered a classic of science fiction. Frankenstein deals with scientific progress and dubious experiments that get out of control, as well as the creator's responsibility for his creation.
Considering that del Toro admitted that the most important figure in the English heritage for him is Mary Shelley, we can expect to see a fairly faithful adaptation of the original source.
Frankenstein Release Date
Frankenstein is scheduled to shoot in February 2024, so there's no firm release date yet, but fans can expect a long wait as the movie probably won't be released until late 2025.
