The most common thing said about Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is that the legendary director was simply handed a huge amount of money and was told to create a movie that he wanted to see when he was a child.

Pacific Rim is a sci-fi movie that has a rather silly premise, but is saved and turned into a masterpiece by the brilliant filmmaking that brings it all to life. At the center of the movie is a war between humanity and monstrous sea creatures.

Basically, the movie is one huge fight between these sea creatures, called Kaiju, and the Jaegers, the special weapon that, as the battles intensify, a former pilot and a trainee are paired to operate in a desperate attempt to save the world from apocalypse which will come if the Kaijus win.

However, it seems like a mission impossible for humanity to win this battle, so the only hope is these two unlikely heroes who will do everything in and out of the sea to save mankind.

“It is a perfect film in that it accomplishes everything anyone who loves those types of genres could want. You watch it and feel like a 9 year old cheering as monsters get punched in the face with giant metal fists. Del Toro sought out to make an homage to the Giant Mech and Giant Monster movies and TV shows we all know and love and he succeeded in the best way possible,” Rdditor blong217 said.

The film was somewhat underrated after its release in the U.S., but became a smash in China, grossing $114 million there alone and $411 million worldwide. The budget of the film was also impressive: bringing the Kaiju-Jaegers stand-off to screens cost del Toro $190 million.

However, while the 2013 film is mostly highly praised by both critics and audiences, the 2018 spinoff is something that fans of the movie don't like to talk about, as it failed every expectation that fans of the original film had for the sequel.

Pacific Rim will be available for streaming on Netflix on February 1.
