Groundbreaking $165 Million Movie David Lynch "Will Never Watch"
Looks like one of the best sci-fi movies of the recent years did not (and will not) impress the iconic director.
Turns out, his own failed Dune movie still plagues David Lynch, and this is why he doesn't want to know anything about the of Denis Villeneuve's take on classic Frank Herbert's novel.
With films like Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, David Lynch has created mesmerizing masterpieces of surrealist cinema.
The director also directed an ill-fated adaptation of sci-fi novel Dune early in his career.
The production was apparently so disastrous for Lynch that he still does not want to talk about it. The director has made it perfectly clear once again, in a recent interview with French cinema magazine Cahiers du Cinéma.
This is what the Twin Peaks ' creator had to say about Villeneuve's latest feature film: "I will never watch it, and I don't even want you to tell me about it, ever."
Blunt and harsh. Just like that.
For many fans, Denis Villeneuve's version of Dune is one of the best genre movies of recent years. His visually stunning adaptation boasts a star-studded cast, and has gained favorable reviews everywhere movies are discussed.
Villeneuve's Dune won 6 Oscars, and the second part of the movie is on its way to presumably fascinate audiences even more.
But all of that is of no importance for Lynch. After Eraserhead and The Elephant Man, he shot his first big studio blockbuster in the early 80s with Dune.
To date, it remains his only film of this kind. The studio took control of the editing, leaving little of Lynch's original vision in the final theatrical release.
Since this bitter experience, Lynch has refused to speak publicly about Dune.
As the current interview by Cahiers du Cinéma shows, the mere mention of it in any context triggers very strong disgust from the cult director, which he doesn't shy away from expressing.
