Griselda TV Series’ Ending Has Fans Up In Arms
They are concerned that it was made to preserve the "female empowerment" narrative, which fans find distasteful.
Summary:
- Netflix 's Griselda TV series received high praise from critics and audiences who loved the story and acting
- Unfortunately, the show significantly distorted the real events, which some fans found quite distasteful
- They believe the show portrays the drug lord as a tragic figure, despite all the evil she has done
The recently released Netflix miniseries Griselda, which depicts the life of the titular drug lord Griselda Blanco, portrayed by Sofía Vergara, received rave reviews from critics and audiences, who praised the intense story and well-acted characters.
However, because it was based on a true story, the show didn't avoid controversy, as many of its aspects deviated from real events and even heavily romanticized Blanco's personality, making her much more likable than she actually was.
Beware of spoilers for Griselda ahead.
The Show Portrays The Drug Lord As A Tragic Figure
One of the most questionable decisions made by the creators was not to show the last years of her life, ending the series on a heartfelt note with Griselda reminiscing about the time she spent with her sons while sitting in a prison cell.
In an interview with Variety, the show's executive producer, Eric Newman, explained that this was done to show that she actually cared for her children, and that the subsequent deaths of three of them was the greatest loss of her life.
Many fans didn't appreciate such a creative decision, and raised concerns that it was done solely to not ruin the "female empowerment" narrative of the series, and that making Griselda sympathetic destroyed the core idea of such docudramas.
They rightly bring up the fact that the TV series Narcos, which shares some of its creators with Griselda, didn't shy away from showing Pablo Escobar's brutal but well-deserved end, despite the fact that he also took care of his family (which even led to his downfall).
The Real Griselda Was Much More Ruthless
The new series often smooths things over, showing Griselda shocked that she accidentally caused the death of a two-year-old child, when in reality she was happy that it would teach the boy's father a lesson.
Furthermore, unwilling to pay for a shipment of cocaine, Griselda ordered the murder of Marta Ochoa, which further damaged Blanco's relationship with the Medellín cartel, while the show portrays the woman's death as an accident.
For some reason, the show also ignores Blanco's early years, which fans say is a mistake because it would have shown how she became the ruthless drug lord that she actually was.
Griselda Blanco was gunned down by an unknown hitman on a motorcycle in Medellín, Colombia in 2012, which is quite ironic considering that some sources claim she invented the assassination technique in the first place.
To sum it all up, fans find it incredibly tasteless to try to paint Griselda as some sort of tragic figure, because after all the pain, misery, and death she caused to countless people, there is absolutely nothing tragic about her story.
