Grey's Anatomy Has a Real-Life Nurse in Its Cast, And She Still Performs Surgeries
Despite being in a supporting role, it did not stop her from earning the love and respect of the audience.
Grey's Anatomy, an American medical drama television series on ABC, has introduced an enormous number of characters during its long 19-season run.
Apart from the titular Meredith Grey, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, only a few characters have appeared in each season of the series. And one of them totally deserves to be credited as one of the mains.
BokHee, played by Kathy C. An, is a scrub nurse at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and is considered a background character.
But... Is she really? As many fans point out, the amount of background information is just too much for such a seemingly minor role.
Moreover, BokHee has appeared in every season, which is more than can be said for most of the main characters.
She participates in most of the surgeries, assists in some major operations, and even saves the lives of some major characters, such as Derek Shepherd.
She is also one of the veterans of the hospital, having worked there for a long time, as some episodes suggest. She even made an appearance in the spin-off Private Practice, assisting with Erica Warner's surgery.
BokHee was one of the few nurses to avoid layoffs during the merger with Mercy West, and she survived the hospital shooting when Gary Clark killed a total of 11 people.
Fans even joke that her husband is most likely tired of hearing, "You'll never guess what happened at work today."
"She survived every awful thing at Grey-Sloan mercy death hospital," Reddit user subtlelikeawreckball said.
Moreover, Kathy C. An is also a scrub nurse in real life, working with open heart surgeries in Los Angeles to this day.
Sandra Oh, who portrayed Cristina Yang, even referred to Kathy as "her second mother."
With such a conspicuous history on the show, it is understandable why so many fans are disappointed that BokHee is not getting the recognition she deserves.
Even though she only has a handful of lines, she appears in almost every major event at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
And even though her face is often hidden behind a medical mask, it has not stopped BokHee from earning the undying love and respect of the show's fans.
