Is this really the end of the era?

Grey's Anatomy is one of the longest-running shows on television today. A lot has happened in its 19 seasons.

Characters have been killed off with or without obvious reasons, breakups and romances, lives have been saved, and unfortunate deaths have occurred.

But it seems that its era as one of the most popular TV shows is coming to an end. The last two episodes that aired on ABC these days brought the show its lowest ratings ever.

They were both released on the same day, and the first episode had 3.255 million viewers, which is quite bad, but not bad enough to cause panic.

However, the time for the showrunners to go desperate came right after that, when the following 10pm episode lost 12% of its audience and only got 2.857 million viewers, which (if you are not familiar with how TV works) is terrible for a top-rated show.

And frankly, if it wasn't Grey's Anatomy, any other show would be on the chopping block at this point.

The reasons for this fall may be different, but we have some facts to speculate about. For example, in one of the episodes mentioned, Grey's Anatomy lost one of its long-time actors, and another nominal star, Ellen Pompeo, is now gone as well.

Having less popular characters could mean that there are actually fewer things for fans to follow with genuine interest.

Another bit of news about the show is that showrunner Krista Vernoff, who returned to the series in 2017 and has made a lot of things happen on the show since then, is now leaving.

In fact, she couldn't hold back tears when she talked about it with TVLine at the show's recent PaleyFest panel.

She said that the thing she's most proud of is that Grey's Anatomy has actually helped save lives in real life, according to fan letters that have shared how they learned medical things from the show.

It's already known that the show has been extended to its 20th season, with executive producer Meg Marinis on board. And maybe, all things considered, this season should be the last?

It seems that Grey's Anatomy has served its purpose and is ready to be wrapped up.
