Grey's Anatomy Fans Still Can't Forgive Shondaland For This Useless Storyline
No one suffered more than poor Sofia.
Summary:
- Grey's Anatomy is an ABC procedural drama that has been running for 19 seasons.
- Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins were one of the most popular couples on the show.
- However, their relationship ended in a divorce and custody battle over their daughter, Sofia, which was very controversial among viewers.
Just like in real life, the relationships we see on screen have to be complicated to be perceived as realistic. People are very complex creatures who aren't always rational, so what some people think is the best course of action is something others wouldn't even dare to think about.
Of course, it is hard to see the couple you have been rooting for for years break up. When the breakup is ugly, it hits even harder. If the breakup results in a divorce after a custody battle over a child, it can reach catastrophic levels.
While both parents usually believe they're acting out of genuine concern for their child, in reality, the feelings often take over and create a truly hostile environment. In that regard, Callie and Arizona's custody battle over Sofia was very realistic. However, the entire storyline was so poorly written and pointless that fans found it simply cruel.
Who Won Grey’s Anatomy’s Custody Battle?
Even though viewers sincerely believed that after eight seasons of Callie's character development, she would be able to become a more balanced person, the show proved the opposite.
Instead of thinking about her child's needs and giving her peace of mind after the divorce process, which was not easy in itself, she felt it was right to move in with her new girlfriend. Not wanting to put her new relationship to the test of distance led Callie to a difficult decision to start the battle for full custody of Sofia.
Not only was her case in court extremely weak, but with every move, it became more obvious than ever how out of touch and selfish Callie was acting. After all these years of Arizona being there for them, she was ready to throw away every good thing they ever had in their marriage.
When Arizona won the battle and Sofia had to be separated from Callie, the consequences of such a decision became apparent. The daughter became depressed and anxious at being separated from her mother, but even that didn't make Torres admit she was wrong.
This level of selfishness is something you would have expected from this character in seasons 3 or 4, when she was much more reckless. In season 12, however, it just made the audience cringe and want it to be over.
What's worse is that the two were reunited behind the cameras after Arizona was written off the show. All the drama, starting with the divorce and ending with the ruinous Callie Torres custody battle, was just to give the fans an excuse for a happy ending and call it a day.
If you want to rewatch the Calzona story from the great beginning to the unfortunate finale, Grey's Anatomy is available for streaming on Netflix and Hulu.
