Grey's Anatomy Fans Fear This Producer Abuses Power in Favor of Their Character
Otherwise, she would be out years ago.
Over the years, Grey's Anatomy has had many hits and misses when it comes to characters and their storylines.
Some were welcomed and embraced by fans, while others felt forced and had to be endured for as long as it took to get them over with.
Some of these arcs, unfortunately, have been going on for many years and don't seem to be coming to an end anytime soon.
Others do, but too late for viewers to really appreciate their endings. The latter sentiment applies especially to Catherine Avery, whose character, fans are convinced, has overstayed her welcome.
There were some good times early on when her character seemed appropriate and her actions actually justified.
Catherine was never meant to be easily likable and sweet, but her strength and wisdom made her someone who earned a lot of respect from both the people around her and the audience behind the screen.
It's not just Avery who has a lot of power; Debbie Allen, the actress who portrays her on the show, joined the Grey's Anatomy production team as an executive producer in season 12.
While she's not the only one making decisions about her character's storyline, she's certainly in a position to influence it. And that's where fans see the problem.
It is quite annoying for many to see a recurring character being given more protagonism than the actual main characters that were present in previous seasons. Especially those who have left the show while Catherine Avery stayed.
It's hard to call someone a villain in a show where the morals of most of the characters have always been very gray, but the toxicity and manipulation behind some of the things she's done can't be denied.
Even now, with her health declining and the storyline seemingly coming to an end, fans are afraid to believe their luck. If anyone is going to be miraculously cured of cancer, it will be Catherine.
Whether season 19 will be the last we see of Catherine Avery, despite Debbie Allen's position, or if the writers will find a way to keep her on the show for the next season, we will have to wait and find out for ourselves.
Tune in to ABC on Thursdays to not miss another episode of Grey's Anatomy.
