Judging by the actress' extensive filmography, the decision to leave Grey's Anatomy was more than the right one.

Sandra Oh's character in Grey's Anatomy, heart surgeon Cristina Yang, has a difficult personality and the ability to accept the blows of fate with dignity: she experienced the death of her father, a runaway bridegroom, unsuccessful pregnancies, and a plane crash.

Why Did Sandra Oh Leave Grey's Anatomy?

Sandra Oh began her career as a ballerina, but later decided to connect her life to the film industry. Unlike Ellen Pompeo, Sandra already had experience playing leading roles before filming Grey's Anatomy.

She starred in The Diary of Evelyn Lau and Bean, Last Night, The Red Violin and Waking the Dead. But her biggest work was of course Grey's Anatomy. Sandra was a member of the medical procedural cast for almost ten years: from 2005 to 2014.

However, in 2014, after ten seasons, the actress announced her departure from the television project. She felt that she had given her character everything she could and it was time to move on to other projects.

Sandra Oh's Next Big Role Was a Spy Hit

Four years later, Sandra got a part in the most popular spy series of recent years – Killing Eve. The actress herself admitted that she had been waiting for such a role for thirty years. In Grey's Anatomy and other projects she was always a secondary character in the background, but with Killing Eve everything was exactly the opposite.

When Sandra Oh received the script, she first looked for an image of a doctor or a secretary. However, it soon became clear that the creators of the spy drama wanted her to play the lead role, which gave the actress a second major breakthrough in her career.

After Killing Eve, the number of projects with Sandra Oh's participation increased – she voiced Debbie Grayson in Invincible and Virana in Raya and the Last Dragon, played the lead role in the comedy The Chair and the drama The Same Storm.

In 2022, Sandra starred in another TV hit, The Sandman, playing the role of The Prophet. Her most recent major project was the series The Sympathizer, starring Robert Downey Jr.

The show is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen and tells the story of events after the Vietnam War, when a communist spy nicknamed The Captain goes to Los Angeles, where he continues to lead a double life, reporting back to his homeland on the movements of the enemies of his people.
