After George RR Martin's recent comments about how he prefers the dragons in House of the Dragon to those that appeared in Game of Thrones, Reddit featured a fascinating discussion on the issue.

Martin's problem with the GoT dragons was that, in his eyes, they lacked "personality". But, as one fan pointed out, this was natural as all three were "birthed and raised" by the same person.

Daenerys was the mother to three dragons. She had a close bond with each of them, having brought them into the world on the funeral pyre of Khal Drogo and taken them with her as she set out to take the Iron Throne.

And the strength of that bond makes her death even more tragic than we may have thought. After spiralling into madness, Dany was killed by Jon Snow.

And what came next was one of the most touching moments of the entire show.

Drogon (named after Khal Drogo), enters and gently prods her lifeless body. Like any child grieving a parent who has passed, Drogon's actions speak louder than any words could have done.

It's a moment of pure love. Because for all her many failings – and let's be honest, by this time she had plenty – Dany was the world to Drogon.

It was that unconditional love you get from a dog who sees beyond human fault and is simply there by your side in everything you do.

Without human emotion and intelligence, Drogon was simply there by his mother's side, doing her will as she became ever more deranged.

While Jon Snow represented the human race and had to make the tough call to end the life of Dany, Drogon had no such thoughts. He was simply there to try to rouse his mother.

It was a fitting send-off for Dany and a great way to complete her character arc. Lying dead, in fine clothes and her hair neatly styled, her favourite dragon was lost.

This was in complete contrast to the show's first glimpse of a dragon way back at the end of season 1.

Then, Dany emerged naked, with nothing to her name but a fervent desire to place a Targaryen queen on the throne at King's Landing.

Like the viewers, she had never before seen a dragon and had no real idea how to raise one or train it. And yet Drogon was there right up until the bitter end. It was truly tragic and made compelling viewing.
