Gossip Girl Fans, Rise Up: Cult Show Might Be Back With OG Cast
Posts on the series' official accounts can only hint at one thing.
We are officially back in the 2010s – posts with the following caption appeared on Gossip Girl's official Instagram and Twitter:
"Welcome back, Upper East Siders. After a long time away, I see it didn't take much time for you to dirty up the clean slates I gave you."
Comments on both social media sites are filled with enthusiastic comments from fans who don't understand what's going on, but hope these posts hint at what all Gossip Girl fans have secretly dreamed of all these years – a reboot of the original series with the original cast.
Yes, we are just as shocked as you are.
Gossip Girl premiered in September 2007 and quickly became a hit, spawning numerous fan accounts on Tumblr and forcing glossy fashion editors to analyze the style of key characters.
Characters' lines were turned into quotes, the soundtrack was downloaded onto thousands of iPods, and the ensemble cast was torn apart for interviews. New York Magazine even named Gossip Girl the greatest show of its time.
Gossip Girl gave each of its main cast members a level of fame that shocked them.
Being part of the show became so prestigious that celebrities dreamed of getting a cameo; thus, supermodels Tyra Banks and Karlie Kloss, entrepreneur and former mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg, designer Alexa Chung and many others appeared in the show.
It is not surprising that many years later, in 2021, Joshua Safran decided to repeat the success of the original series, trying to ride the then emerging wave of popularity of the 00s and 10s' shows.
The remake debuted on streaming in July 2021, becoming the most-watched series on HBO Max.
However, the series was canceled after just two seasons. According to Deadline, the project failed to "capture the zeitgeist the way the 2007-12 CW show did."
The cryptic posts could point to the remake revival, but that seems highly doubtful after the show's failure and cancellation.
Additionally, the Instagram post even tagged the actors from the original series – Blake Lively, Chace Crawford, Penn Badgley and Leighton Meester.
Considering how shows that came out 10-15 years ago are popular now, a Gossip Girl reboot with an adult original cast would be a real hit.
All we can do now is to keep our fingers crossed and wait for the official information.
