The actor explained that while he strives to do good for people, he will never "shrink" himself just to please them.

Summary:

  • Daniel Kaluuya became a world-famous star overnight after his performance in 2017's Get Out
  • In a recent interview, the actor explained why he doesn't like to appear alongside his less successful peers
  • Fans found his vague reasoning quite disappointing, as it came across as rather selfish

After his breakout performance as Chris Washington in 2017's psychological horror Get Out, Daniel Kaluuya has made a name for himself as one of the most prominent actors of this generation.

The film was an instant success, thanks in no small part to Kaluuya's outstanding acting, earning high praise from both critics and fans as a breath of fresh air in the genre, and even winning the Best Original Screenplay category at the 90th Academy Awards.

But unlike some other stars who became world-famous overnight only to shamelessly squander the momentum, Kaluuya continued to take his career to new heights and prove the range of his talent.

In the years that followed, he only solidified his status by appearing in several more acclaimed films such as Black Panther (2018), Judas and the Black Messiah (2021), and Nope (2022), delivering equally impressive performances.

Kaluuya Chose To Stay Away From Lesser-Known Colleagues

However, it seems that after achieving so much, Kaluuya has begun to distance himself from his less fortunate colleagues, as it would cost him "a certain level of fame and power," which the actor mentioned in his interview with GQ.

He recalled an offer to appear in an undisclosed fashion campaign alongside two lesser-known white actors, which he had to turn down because it wouldn't "look good" unless he was alone.

The actor empathized that it's not because he's too "cool" for it, but rather because he's conscious about "representing right" and that not all money is worth it, so he's very picky about taking jobs.

In addition, he pointed out that he wants to do great things and help people in as many ways as possible by bringing jobs and helping everyone grow artistically, but he will never "shrink" himself just to be polite.

Fans Not Okay With Kaluuya’s Stance

Fans are quite disappointed with the actor's statements, because even aside from the racial connotation, which was most likely unintentional, they say he sounds pretty arrogant and full of himself.

Kaluuya's reasoning seems rather incoherent to them, because while he explicitly stated that he doesn't feel better than the others, the rest of his statements make it seem like he believes that sharing the spotlight with those who are less successful is demeaning to him.

The vague nature of the way he explains his ideas doesn't really help, as it still comes off as quite egotistical, fans say, as all of this could have been said in a much more measured way.

Some of them even wonder why he had to say such things at all, since it would obviously cause a backlash among readers.

It should be pointed out that the actor's wording was actually quite unclear, making it extremely easy to misunderstand, and Kaluuya most likely didn't mean for any of this to sound disrespectful in any way.

Either way, even if the fans' concerns are indeed valid, it is important to separate the artist from his art, so that none of this undermines the actor's talent.
