George Martin Claims Eight GoT Spinoffs Are in Development: What Are They?
It seems the GoT universe is about to get huge.
George Martin continues to torment his fans. Based on his comments, it became clear that we are unlikely to read The Winds of Winter in the near future, but things are going better with the screen universe created by the author.
We already got a Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, and were pleased with it, and according to Martin's own comments, there are eight more projects in the pipeline. The world's slowest writer revealed this during an interview:
“I also have like eight other spinoff shows that we're developing. The Dunk and Egg show has been greenlit. The others, not yet, but we're still working on them.”
With so many projects planned for the same universe, it is easy to get confused. So let's try to figure out what kind of projects George Martin was talking about.
1. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight
The first to mention is obviously The Hedge Knight project, which will be based on a trilogy about the knight Duncan and his squire Egg.
By the way, there is already a movie version of these short stories. We are talking about the movie A Knight's Tale, starring Heath Ledger in the title role, whose screenwriters borrowed the plot outline from Martin's books.
2. The Jon Snow Spinoff
We will take a look at Jon catching squirrels, sleeping in wolfskin and enjoying sub-zero temperatures.
The project is in development (as Martin said), but so far there has been no comment on whether it has been greenlit, let alone a release date.
3. The Sea Snake
Next, we are waiting for the prequel to House of the Dragon, dedicated to Corlys Velaryon, who was called the best sailor in the history of Westeros.
Although rumor has it that this spinoff is the furthest along in the development process of all the spinoffs (not counting House of the Dragon), there is no official information to confirm that the show is greenlit.
4. 10,000 Ships
This spinoff will take us back a thousand years to the events of GoT to tell the story of Dorne. The main character will be Queen Nymeria, who, along with her army, fled from Essos to another continent. There she ordered her entire fleet to be burned so that none of her people would even think about going back. And then the construction of a new refuge began – Dorne.
There are many books about Nymeria in the world of Game of Thrones. For example, Arianne Martell dreamed of reading Ten Thousand Ships during her imprisonment. However, Martin himself has not written anything serious about the queen's life. So the writers are left to their own devices.
If the project survives, the script will be written by Amanda Segel. No other details are known.
5. Three Animated Projects
Did you know that there are three animated spinoffs of Game of Thrones planned? Of course, this will be an adult animation, you can't do without blood and guts, but in general there is very little information.
The first animated series will be about the Golden Empire of Yi Ti. It's been said that Imperial China served as inspiration for Martin. The other two spinoffs are merely known to be in development.
6. Flea Bottom Show
There were only rumors about this spinoff, but HBO canceled its development. There could be an unusual show about the slums, the cesspool of King's Landing, where a lot of dark things probably happen.
7. The Bloodmoon Prequel
HBO wanted to make a show that would be very different from GoT in literally every way. And they decided to go back 8,000 years and tell the story of the first White Walkers. The pilot was shot for $30 million, and then the project was just shut down.
Why? Because of the viewers' reaction to the GoT finale, which was filmed without any source material, and Bloodmoon had to do without the source at all. HBO was afraid that fans wouldn't like that approach given the previous failure, and canceled the spinoff. Or just shelved it, who knows.
So if we dismiss the canceled projects, we end up with eight Game of Thrones spinoffs (including House of the Dragon). Let's hope we get to see at least one of them in the near future.
