Here’s the answer to the question that’s been bothering us for years.

Summary:

  • Teen Wolf was an MTV supernatural teen television series that aired from 2011 to 2017.
  • The show followed Scott McCall, whose life was completely changed after he became a werewolf.
  • Fans believe that werewolves' susceptibility to electricity has everything to do with Greek mythology and the powers of Zeus.

Just like many other teen shows from the late 2000's and early 2010's, Teen Wolf lives rent-free in the minds of many millennials to this day.

Even though the show ended almost 7 years ago, there are still many speculations floating around the web. Some of them have more to do with the characters, while others deal with the lore of the series.

Even though it is impossible to find out how deeply the creative team behind the show wrote down the lore for all the creatures that appeared in it, with everything that happened during the 100 episodes of the drama, the viewers got to know a lot about werewolves' origins, their power and weaknesses.

The latter included wolfsbane, which is often used as a fictional name for aconitum, and mountain ash, which comes from the burned wood of a mountain ash tree. But there was something else: electric torture.

And while this may be a random method of torture that would hurt any living creature equally, some fans see a deeper meaning behind it.

Teen Wolf Werewolf Weaknesses

From what we know of the werewolf lore provided in the show, it goes all the way back to ancient Greece, where King Lycaon of Arcadia fed the god of heaven and thunder, Zeus, his own sons, and in return for this travesty, Zeus turned Lycaon and his people into werewolves.

Given the feisty nature of the god, and knowing that this wasn't his only conflict with humans, it's safe to assume that he wanted to secure a way to control those he punished. As the god of heaven and thunder, Zeus has always used lightning as one of his tools, so he may have used it on werewolves to control them.

This theory was shared by one of the show's fans, Babywalker66, on the r/FanTheories subreddit. Though some people still argued that they thought the electric torture was just an easy way to hurt them, since it's unlikely their healing powers would keep up with the flow of sensory and motor stimulation, others found the idea quite interesting.

As long as the team doesn't get together again and debunk or confirm this idea, you can use it as a head canon from now on. After all, there is not much new information coming out about the shows of the past decade.

And if you feel like giving Teen Wolf a rewatch and looking for more clues that could prove this theory to be completely canon-compliant, the show is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video or Hulu.
