Good thing, she had some great development later on.

In every show, there is a possibility that the supporting character will be stuck for much longer than expected.

Sometimes it's the actors' incredible performances that win the hearts of the audience, and people beg for more. Other times, it's the production team that sees more potential in the character than they originally thought. In that case, winning over the audience is just a matter of time.

This is what happened with Kathleen Gati's Dr. Liesl Obrecht on General Hospital. What's interesting is that it took time not only for the audience to warm up to her character, but also for the actress herself.

That's not surprising, since Liesl was only supposed to be on the show for a few episodes and wasn't the most fleshed-out character of them all, to say the least.

In an interview with Soaps.com, the actress recalled the process of building the character and getting the first signs of recognition:

“There was no humanity in the beginning. I didn’t see it, I didn’t find it, it wasn’t written, and that wasn’t my job. I was there to do some evil and dark things. <...> When you’re evil and dark, I got a lot of hate — which is expected — but then people were really loving it,” Gati said.

Any actor who has ever played a villain knows how much fun it can be to be at the center of chaos and destruction, something you don't get to do in your everyday life. But the most rewarding moments always have to do with the audience's approval. When people are willing to admit that they love to hate you, it's a sign that you're doing something right.

This week marks the 11th anniversary of Dr. Liesl Obrecht's first appearance on General Hospital. If you want to relive some of the character's best moments, you can stream the soap on Hulu.
