General Hospital's Portia Is Annoying, But She's Right In One Thing
Even Disney villain mothers aren’t that senseless sometimes.
Summary:
- General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air since 1963.
- One of the most beloved current couples on the show is Spencer Cassadine and Trina Robinson.
- Trina’s mother is against the relationship but has one really strong point in her argument.
To say that there is no other character who has disappointed viewers more than Portia in the last year of the show would not be entirely accurate. General Hospital is not having its best years, so there have been some flops along the way. But Portia Robinson would have been in the top 5.
It's not that she did something completely unforgivable as a character, it's that the writers do unforgivable things to her. Instead of being a slightly overprotective but understanding and compassionate mother, Portia has already turned into a caricature of every evil stepmother from Disney 's cartoons.
No matter how much she tries to ruin Sprina, the couple keeps moving forward. The only problem is that Portia was actually right about Spencer.
Why Portia Hates Spencer
Like any mother, Dr. Portia Robinson wants the best for her daughter, and Spencer, charming as he is, is far from the best. If he's not in trouble, he's in trouble for someone else, which is why Portia doesn't seem to trust him at all.
Although he is clearly smitten with Trina and has been from the beginning, the passion of two young souls is not enough to make it work. Not in real life, and certainly not in Port Charles, where anything crazy can happen.
So far, Spencer has been nothing but a rolling stone, and Portia is right. While the guy has shown some compassion and care for not only Trina, but also his little brother Ace, he still hasn't quite settled down. If his evil ex, Esme, could get back on her feet and find a job and a place to live, he certainly could.
The lack of a job, an education, a place to live, or any plans for the future must be affecting Trina as well. While none of these signs are what young adults tend to look for at the beginning of a relationship, this is where the conversations should have started.
Without any character development, Spencer, who is so beloved by the majority of today's viewers, will end up in the realm of completely boring characters that no one wants to watch anymore. In 2024, audiences want to finally have some resolution to his business with Esme, and the next steps for him to explore.
Whether it is an education, a family business, or even criminal activity, no one cares at this point. Spencer needs to move on, and if even Portia noticed, then the audience has been waiting for it for months.
If you want to see where the next year of General Hospital takes the couple, you can tune in to the soap Monday through Friday on ABC.
