The change in the head writers has definitely helped.

Summary:

  • General Hospital is an ABC soap opera that has been on the air for more than 60 years.
  • Although the show recently had a change in head writers, promoting Patrick Mulcahey and Liz Korte to the roles, there is another shake-up coming their way.
  • If Chris Van Etten is to return to his position, this could mark a far more interesting BTS drama than anything on the show.

Even though the majority of General Hospital viewers have noticed an improvement in the quality of the writing since the change in head writers earlier this year, that doesn't mean everyone liked what they saw. Though some of the audience's problems have disappeared, others have appeared in their place, raising more questions for the writers.

However, one thing everyone who has followed the soap long enough can agree on is that all the events that have taken place since the WGA strike of 2023 have brought more drama to the show. Too bad the most interesting parts of it are left behind the camera and not brought into the show's universe.

Why Did General Hospital Change the Head Writers?

For the show that has been on the air for more than 60 years, change is inevitable. Cast members come and go, characters grow old and die to be reborn, and others simply leave for other acting pursuits. The masterminds behind the drama would have to change as well if they didn't want the show to become too repetitive.

It took quite a while for ABC executives to listen to the complaints of the audience and change things in the writing room. First, the change was evident during the WGA strike, when General Hospital was written entirely by temporary writers who weren't part of the union.

Then, when Patrick Mulcahey and Liz Korte stepped into their new roles, viewers celebrated again. This time, they were excited to see the change in power dynamics, some old characters coming back, and newer ones finding their place in Port Charles. Although there were still some people who were not happy, the majority of viewers praised the decision.

And now... well, it looks like the praise wasn't enough to keep Patrick Mulcahey in the head writer's chair. According to the latest reports, despite the growing number of happy fans, General Hospital is bringing back Chris Van Etten instead of the newly appointed Mulcahey. And that makes for much more interesting drama than any of the soap's recent plots.

While viewers may be interested in the reasoning behind such a decision, there's nothing to base an opinion on other than pure speculation. The details behind these changes usually remain confidential, and, more than likely, there won't be any insight into this particular promotion as well.

But the lack of information may be for the best, as General Hospital viewers are now left with their theories, which may be far more entertaining than what actually happens on screen. However, if you don't want to miss out on anything that happens in Port Charles, be sure to tune in to the new episodes Monday through Friday on ABC.
