Bring the best of the soap back.

Summary:

  • General Hospital is a soap opera that has been running on ABC daily since 1963.
  • Just like other soaps, the show has been suffering from a slow but steady decline in viewership since the 2010s.
  • Fans believe that there are a few serious issues with the current writing of the series, which may even worsen its state.

For at least the past three years, the General Hospital fan base's anger with the show's writers has been growing exponentially. Now that the WGA strike and the work of the new temporary writers have proven how different the soap can be even today, they are even more unhappy with the way their favorite show has been treated.

No one expects the show that has been around for more than 60 years to come up with something new and completely unpredictable every single episode. Not only would that be unrealistic and unfair, but it would also tire viewers out with too many plots and twists.

What the fans of General Hospital are really asking for is some kind of dynamic that seems to have been lost over the years. The balance between really good drama, which the actors of the soap have proven to be perfectly capable of portraying, and the insanity that only this genre can allow.

With one outweighing the other, General Hospital is getting more and more boring, to the point where even the die-hard fans are thinking about giving it up. Is there still a chance to pick it up? For sure. All it would take is for the writers to stop being afraid of real scandals and dramatic twists.

General Hospital Love Triangles

One trope that General Hospital certainly lacks is love triangles. Not the ones where you can easily predict the ending, but the ones where both options seem equally exciting and daring. Those triangles would have fans clashing to defend their favorites. These triangles are built on passion.

Many viewers genuinely believed that this was the story the show was going for with Ned and Olivia by bringing Lois back, but they were wrong. Even though it was the legacy story from the '90s, and it may not be as compelling now as it was then, it would at least be a nice nod to nostalgia.

The story the writers had for the characters instead was sweet and heartwarming, for sure. As any reconciliation of fan-favorite characters usually is. But it wasn't scandalous, exciting, or at least a little bit intriguing. This storyline turned out to be the one that viewers will probably forget in a week.

One of the soaps that still do love triangles but doesn't know when to stop is The Young and the Restless. With 3 or 4 storylines like that going on all the time, some might even want to take a little break. Maybe the head writers of General Hospital, Chris Van Etten and Dan O'Connor, and Young & Restless Josh Griffith should talk and share some experiences to balance things out.

If you are still hoping for some of the General Hospital storylines to stay entertaining, tune in to ABC Monday through Friday to not miss a single episode.
