The filmmaker drew parallels between the fight against AI in the film and the ongoing Hollywood strikes.

The Creator, an upcoming sci-fi action thriller directed by Gareth Edwards, best known for his work on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which impressed many fans of the franchise, is fast approaching its release date.

The film will be set in the year 2070 and will tell the story of an ex-special forces agent, portrayed by John David Washington, who is tasked with finding and destroying the mysterious Creator in the aftermath of a war between humans and an AI.

However, it seems that in light of current events, the director now regrets setting the story so far in the future, and should have set it in the present instead.

During an IMAX first look event, he drew parallels between the movie's story and the ongoing Hollywood strikes, as one of the protesters' demands is that the use of artificial intelligence be strictly regulated.

Edwards jokingly revealed that he usually tries to avoid putting a specific date in his movies, but you have to add it when writing a sci-fi story, so he chose 2070.

"Now I feel like an idiot because I should have gone for 2023," the filmmaker added, calling the events of the past few months "scary and weird."

He also mentioned that while pitching the movie, he had to come up with events that led to the conflict between man and machine, and although Gareth didn't go into too much detail, he described the setup as "pretty much the last few months."

As mentioned, the director has already proven with Rogue One that he is more than capable of telling a gripping and compelling sci-fi story (even if Star Wars is more of a space opera than grounded science fiction).

Considering that some have described The Creator as "Star Wars meets The Terminator, " hopefully Edwards won't disappoint fans and will once again deliver a masterpiece that proves his filmmaking talent.

The Creator is scheduled for release on September 29, 2023.
