Game of Thrones Made Infamous Coffee Cup Mistake Not Once But Twice
The Game of Thrones blunder in Season 8, when a modern-day coffee cup somehow ended up in front of Emilia Clarke, playing Daenerys Targaryen, remains infamous to this day.
In fact, that mistake got so well-known thanks to the Internet that the whole event gave Starbucks' a noticeable advertising boost, estimated as $2 billion worth of free PR.
But it was not the only mistake of that sort on Game of Thrones. Just the one that got noticed immediately and went viral in matter of hours, so that the showrunners quickly had to admit that someone from the tired crew indeed blundered with that coffee cup (and later digitally edit the cup out of the episode).
But another mistake of the same type occurred in Season 4 Episode 2 "The Lion and the Rose," which was largely dedicated to the infamous "Purple Wedding." There is shot of the Lannister clan standing together, which caught Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) with another coffee cup in his hand. What's more, Jaime held that cup with his right hand, which was supposed to be missing by that point:
Clearly Coster-Waldau forgot to put on his fake "golden hand", which covered the fact that the actor obviously still had still his right hand attached, unlike the character, for that shot. Besides forgetting to put down the coffee cup.
But why it did not become viral, as happened with Daenerys' coffee? Well, that scene was part of a behind-the-scenes featurette. It didn't actually make it to the episode. Maybe the coffee blunder was the reason it got edited out in the first place, or, quite possibly, simply not as much effort was put into filming that scene.
In any case, shooting schedules on Game of Thrones were grueling, often left people overworked thanks to long hours, and thirsty for coffee to give themselves a bit more energy, so it is no wonder that mistakes like this occurred from time to time. It is perhaps more surprising that in the end only one coffee cup made it into a released episode.
